News in from Dark_Alex [of the PSP custom firmware fame] has opened a forum posting here to discuss the possabilities of a new revalation of a retail PS3 running Debug firmware.
While this makes me happy, I would rather than if it was hacked, that they wouldn't include the ability to load ISO's. This can only be bad for the game development market.
But think of the possabilities..... Hacking the linux side to open thr RSX chip. That would be exciting. With the recent news of Valve possibly porting Steam and Source to linux. How about REALLY playing TF2 on your PS3 Linux partition with FULL 3D Hardware support.

Dammit. forgot about that.
Anyway, forget TF2. How about other homebrews like emulators. I'd love to be able to fire up my Amiga emulator on the PS3 rather than have to boot up my PC. It's just not the same on a PC.
Anyway, the point being, IF this happens, people can create their own software for PS3 and launch it straight from the XMB.

There are a few things about the PS3 that I don't like.
1. Shitty amount of RAM is one, considering that Sony have a 10 year plan for it. I envisage future version of the PS3 [maybe in a couple of years] increasing the RAM. This is not something user serviceable.
2. No PS2 support on the 40GB PS3. The ONLY reason I purchased the 40GB version [and I had the money in my hand for the 60GB] was that I couldn't get one anywhere. Sony stopped selling them. There was no talk about an 80GB version coming out. In my mind, that was Sony doing their best to sell up as much 40GB stock as they could before bringing out the 80GB. I know I will buy a second PS3 in the future but it won't be for a few years. The hard drive size doesn't bother me but it's the "other features" that Sony dropped form the 40GB model. No PS2 support, only 2 USB ports, no Flash card slots etc.
3. It's big. I'm sure that in 2 or 3 years they will have refined the production status and make slim line versions. The CELL processor is already reduced down.
4. European PSN. Sony have fucked over their European PSN customers with a substandard version of PSN, compared to the American store. Those of you who have used both stores will know what I mean. Think of a game or demo on the PS3 that was released on PS3. Time yourself finding it on the American store. Then time yourself finding it on the European store. I guarantee you that it will take you much longer.
Also, the American store allows you to browse "All Games" or something and this was one of the features that Sony spoke up about. But Sony Europe, for whatever stupid reason, decided to make their PSN structure semi cryptic.

1. the ps2 did well with 32 mb Ram and 4 mb vidram
the 256 ram + 256 vidram of the ps3 are enough for the ps3 games, obvious not for linux. The power of the cell and rsx is enough to handled higher compressins for textures etc..
2. I have a 60gb PS3. ^^
Sony only did this things to cut the price down. The ps3 costs atm about 350-400€. Remember the launch PS3s: 600€, and sony still made 200€on every PS3.
3. Maybe a bit slimer, it still produces a shit load of heat (like in GTA IV) and it's only that quiet because of the huge fan.
4. Yes, european psn sucks bad, american psn 4tw.
The best PS3 things still come, like Little big planet, MGS:4 and Home.
BTW: Everybody with a PS3 and no GTA IV yet SHOULD buy it. I finished the story line a few days ago and it really worth every cent. No to mention the Online mode.

Comparing the PS2 to the PS3 is like comparing apples to oranges. It's totally different. The PS2 was a games console.
The PS3 is only PART games console. It is designed to be so much more and much more expandable. It's designed to be your Entertainment Centre, not just a console.
Here's ONE example, here and now, to show the limitations of the RAM. What will this mean a couple of years down the road when the console is limited in what it can do [and possibly won't be brought to it] because of the lack of foresight? The Video Ram is irrelevant. It can only be used for 3D rendering etc, not CPU crunching.
Now, for the example...
Open more than two or three simultaneous web pages.
What? You can't? Why? Oh, you get the message saying there isn't enough memory available.....
Now, as services / applications / other things move onto the web, and you're sitting down in front of your 50 inch in your Entertainment hub, all powered by the PS3.... How the hell are you going to get the most of it.
As I said before, I'm 90% confident that future generations of the PS3 will have more RAM. Unless my vision of the PS3 is much more than Sony's.
