Cool. It looks like there is more wrong with it than just the BDrive. It had firmware 2.80 on it. So I tried updating to 3.01.
It's now in a cycle of trying to install 3.01, failing, and trying again. It always fails. The failure point seems to be different. Sometimes 71%, 82% 85% etc.
Tried a second HDD in it but I get a blank screen. Dammit. Still searching for an answer.
"An error occurred during the update operation. Contact technical support for assistance. (8002F14E)"
I managed to figure out how to fix this.
-Open the side of your PS3 where your HDD is. Take the screw out, but leave the HDD in.
-Whenthe update begins, slide your HDD out of the slot. It will tell you an error occured and it tells you to restart your system and try again. Instead, let the count from 60 run out, your screen will go blank for aabout 30 seconds then it will start back up and tell you that your Hard Drive needs to be reformatted. Now, slide your HDD into place again, and continue with the format. You will lose all your saved data, but your console will work again.

And this might be a resolution. I'm in work and don't have my PS3 with me so I'm using this thread as a notepad until I get home
:
Have you tried the FW 2.50+ bootable recovery mode to fix it yet?
If not, or you have no Idea what I'm talking about try this.
1. With the system off (Standby) Press and hold the Console's power button, do not let go until it powers down to Standby Mode (OFF) again.
2. Release the button
3. Again hold the CONSOLE power button it will beep (power on), beep (video mode do not release) Then give 2 quick beeps (Restore Menu.... RELEASE HERE!!)
You should be presented with 6 options
1 is just a restart do not worry about it
Use Options 2, 3, or 4 to restore various apects
WARNING OPTION 5 DOES A RESTORE BUT WILL WIPE ALL DATA... use as a last resort ONLY
6 is update I would try doing options 2 , 3, and/or 4 FIRST and then resetting the system and updating to see if it works, if not do 2,3 and 4 then try updating from here.
AGAIN!! --- Option 5 will WIPE ALL DATA, use only if you want a last resort try before sending it in and only if your OK with losing data (You MIGHT if you send it in anyway but you never know.)
My friend gave me his ps3 last week because the blu ray drive is broke although the ps 3 still works. i thought i would download my psn games on to it and use it to play them but when i put it online i had to update to firmware 2.76 which downloaded fine but wont install all i get now is error 8002f14e and it is stuck in a loop trying to install firmware
when ever i turn the ps on it goes straight to install and will not get to any menus
if you can help it would be great thanks

right, at best the blu ray drive is fine. When I opened the PS3, the blu ray cable connecting the drive to the motherboard wasn't connected at either end. fucking amateurs.
To make matters worse, it seems that whoever tried to fix it before I bought it, fucked it up and broke the black clip off the connector where the cable goes in, on two different clips. Not sure if I can fix it without getting messy. Might have to see if a local repair shop has the proper tools.
