IF you are more interested in creating music professionally, try Ableton Live.
Thats a very intuitive (dance)music production studio with professional sounds, synths and effects like compressors etc.
I used to use Cubase and some plugins and an expensive soundcardset( € 2000,-, yes two thousand )
I didn't like the workflow and wanted to focus more on my creativity instead of configuring stuff.
Ableton Live gives me air to breathe again.

Both those softwares Cubase especially are too expensive for a noob like me although I will give the Ableton demo a try. I have a mate that uses Cubase and I do know it has lots of geeky things to it.

The cool thing with Ableton is that it comes with a very short / simple built-in tutorial that will take you a day of reading and clicking and you know the basics of Ableton.
I also think that Ableton has the best price/value. Ableton is mostly sample based with midi possibilities, more a tracker than sequencer.
But if you like MIDI, then Ableton has enough to automate / operate. And.. Ableton is rock solid. You can take your sampleset with you on a harddisk and a laptop and create music anywhere.
Cubase is meant to be a sequencer to control (external)instruments / controllers. Something you dont want to take with you.
Ps: Daft Punk uses Ableton Live (at least) for their live performances and also the Behringer BFC2000.

Contest:
There is a remix context on Beatport.com of the latest Depeche Mode song: Peace.
I'm joining the contest and here's my version so far. Still not satisfied, but tried to speed and spice up the song.

i suggest you add some attack to the snare sound. it sounds "loose" somehow

Nice, thanks. I'm going to see if I understand what you mean, cuz it's a clap/snare which is already quite snappy.

i like how you use the bass and rythm, it fits in.
i think the claps are a bit too sharp and conspicuous and it overall sounds (especially at the beginning) a bit too much like a drum machine.
it works fine, but somehow it rather runs kinda parallel with the melody than being "one" coherent track.
